Doug grew up with his four brothers and one sister in Bethesda, Maryland, across the street from the National Naval Medical Center and The National Institutes of Health. A lasting memory of his is, at age 10, walking down and looking across Wisconsin Ave. as the hearse carrying President JFK's body pulled into the National Naval Medical Center. As early as 8 years old, Doug would canvas the neighborhood whenever it snowed, offering to shovel driveways and, in the summer, mowed lawns. In 1968, he got his first "real" job washing dishes and bussing tables, with his goal being to save money to buy a pool table, which he purchased one year later.
He began college on a football scholarship at Clemson University in 1971, but left after his freshman year with a career ending injury. While attending the University of Maryland, Doug was offered a six day-a-week job managing a retail billiard operation for out of town owners. Accepting the position, Doug attended night school and summer school and graduated with a business degree from the University of Maryland in 1976, the same year he purchased his first home.
In 1977, Doug left his employer and began, with a partner, his own billiard operation, Champion Billiards & Barstools. Over the years they grew to be the #1 billiard retailer in the country, with nine locations and six billiard sports cafes with over 325 employees. In 2011, Doug and his wife, Nancy, opened a boxing gym in Rockville, Md., which they still operate.
Due to his business success, Doug was able to address his passion for real estate and, over the years, has bought and sold a couple dozen properties, developing two commercial locations and three residences. Doug and his wife, Nancy, first purchased property on Marco Island in 2011 and have been full-time residents since 2017. Their son, Andy, lives and works in Baltimore and their daughter, Michelle, lives and works in the Annapolis area. His four granddaughters and one grandson call him "Big Doug", which is what he called his grandfather. Let "Big Doug The Realtor" help you with all of your real estate needs!
